Course Overview

The HubStudio is thrilled to welcome experienced Voic & Dialect coach Laura Farrell to the HubStudio. Laura holds an MFA in Voice from NIDA, a Post Grad Diploma and Bachelor in Voice and Music Theatre from VCA, is a certified teacher of Knight Thompson Speechwork and Vocal Combat Technique, lectures for NIDA’s actor training programs, and is the resident voice and dialect coach at Belvoir St Theatre.

This six-week accent intensive will cover the specificities of a General American Accent, with a focus on embodying the technical to enable total ease, dexterity, and believability when acting in an accent. Throughout this process, you will learn how to approach text in accent, specifically, autonomy in preparation for auditions, and develop an individual daily accent workout to remain ‘accent fit’ and at an industry level of proficiency year round!

Course Outline
Throughout the six weeks, we will focus on the following areas (or P’s):

  • POSTURE – the muscles that shape the sounds and how they move
  • PROSODY – the patterns of rhythm and melody
  • PRONUNCIATION – the specific vowel and consonant shifts’
  • PERFORMANCE – application of accent to scenes and monologues
  • PRACTICE – individual daily accent workout plany include;

Course Outcomes

Actors will walk away from the series with the skills required to physically and energetically transform into a character speaking in a General American accent. These skills include;
  • Embodiment the oral posture of the accent
  • Ability to identify and target key pronunciation features
  • An understanding of the prosodic features of the accent and how it can shape character
  • A process for applying accent to text for auditions
  • A process for staying ‘accent fit’ through a daily workout plan

When: 6 x Thursday Evenings

Dates: 12th September  – 17th October 2024

Cost: $320.00 incl GST(10% off for members)

Time: 6pm – 8pm (AEST – Sydney time)

Format: Online using Zoom

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. Please note full payment of the course is due by the time the course finishes. You can start payment instalments at anytime upon receipt of the invoice.

About Laura Farrell
Laura Farrell (she/her) is a Voice and Dialect Coach living and working on Gadigal land. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Voice from NIDA; a Post Graduate Diploma in Voice from the Victorian College of the Arts; and a Bachelor of Music Theatre from the Victorian College of the Arts. Laura is also a certified teacher of Knight Thompson Speechwork and Vocal Combat Technique. She is a lecturer for NIDA’s BFA and Diploma actor training programs and the resident voice and dialect coach at Belvoir St Theatre.
