Course Overview
The HubStudio is excited to offer a fantastic new film coach to the increasing line up of online workshops. With the amount of US content being filmed in Australia, this is an imperative workshop for Australian performers. Series coach Anthony Gooley is a very accomplished actor and NIDA graduate. His professional career across theatre, film & television has given Anthony a deep knowledge of both the modern and classical American canon.
With so much American content being filmed on our shores, this is an imperative class for any local actor – of any age. It’s not just about having a watertight accent – there are fundamental cultural differences which need to be understood.
The American national identity is not just an accent, it’s an ethos. American producers are constantly looking for the right local actors who can capture the required energy for their content. In this workshop we will pull apart and apply this to some of the best contemporary American writing for screen, with students working on two pieces over the course of the day.

Course Outline
The students will first understand the theory behind this comparison before applying it to their chosen scenes. The class will focus on these elements:
- Discussion and analysis of the American national identity, and the fundamental differences we face as Australians and, specifically, as Australian performers..
- Streamlining all work to make it its most dramatically potent – don’t get stuck in dismissive Aussie naturalism
- Rising to the required emotional stakes of the work
- Structuring your work to give it the required emotional arc.
Course Outcomes
This series will equip you with all the necessary tools to create a visceral and completely authentic rendition of American content. A selection of general outcomes are:
- Dialect refinement.
- Understanding the cultural narrative of your character.
- The bravery to go beyond your comfort zone.
- Astute skills in scene preparation and execution.

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. About Anthony Gooley
A NIDA graduate, Anthony’s theatre credits include The Caretaker, A View from the Bridge, Death Of A Salesman (Ensemble Theatre), Bernhardt/Hamlet, Boy Swallows Universe (Queensland Theatre), The Mystery of the Valkyrie (QPAC), The Glass Menagerie (State Theatre Company of South Australia), Calamity Jane (Belvoir/The Comedy Theatre/Arts Centre Melbourne), Assassins (Sydney Opera House), Replay (Griffin Theatre), Venus & Adonis, The Crucible, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Of Mice and Men, A Doll’s House, Othello, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors, The Libertine (Sport For Jove), Good Works, All My Sons (Eternity Playhouse), The Lost Echo (STC). As director, Steve Martin’s The Underpants (Seymour Centre), Orphans (Red Line Productions) and Gruesome Playground Injuries (The Kings Collective). Anthony appeared in the feature film Buckley’s Chance (Blacklab Entertainment) opposite Bill Nighy, and Venus & Adonis (Sport for Jove). Television credits include Apples Never Fall, Young Rock, Joe vs Carole, Underbelly, Packed to the Rafters, Satisfaction and Home and Away. Anthony is a Sydney Theatre Award winner for his performance in The Libertine and was also nominated for his performances in The Caretaker, Inner Voices, Of Mice and Men and A Doll’s House.
