Remember When Acting Was Fun?

I personally went through a phase of desperately wanting to work but feeling a sense of dread every time a self-tape request came through. So many thoughts swirled in my head: loathing the process of learning lines, scrambling to find time and dragging a friend over to read with me, setting up the camera, finding a good wall—and the ultimate MVP of all discouraging thoughts—”What’s the point? I won’t get it anyway.”

After some serious self-reflection, I realized the truth: I was exhausted. Exhausted from putting myself out there with little reward, tired of doing all the work, and worn down by hearing someone else had gotten the role when I knew I had nailed the audition.

So, I had to stop and reassess. Do I still love acting? Do I even want to do this? The answer, thankfully, was YES. I LOVE it. But the real question became: how can I keep it from draining me?

The answer was simple: make it enjoyable again. Embrace the excitement of each self-tape. Find joy in doing the work and making the character mine. Instead of obsessing over whether I’d book the role, I reframed it as an opportunity to act—to step into someone else’s shoes for a moment. And that realization was thrilling.

Who cares if I don’t get it? I prepared, I had fun, and I created my own authentic version of the character. Each self-tape, each audition, is part of the journey, and that work will always inform your growth as an actor.

Let’s reclaim the joy of acting together.
