Course Overview
The HubStudio is thrilled to host multi-award-winning director Paige Rattray for a special two-day theatre masterclass in Sydney. With a distinguished career including roles as Director, New Work and Artistic Development at Sydney Theatre Company (2022-2024) and Associate Artistic Director at Queensland Theatre, Paige brings a wealth of experience and a dynamic approach to storytelling. Her celebrated productions, including Fangirls, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and Death of a Salesman, have earned her critical acclaim and multiple awards.
This Masterclass offers a rare chance for emerging & professional actors to work with a director of national significance. Over two days, Paige will guide twelve participants through scene material from Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller and The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh. Actors will have the opportunity to explore their craft under her expert direction, pushing boundaries and honing their skills.
Each actor will be paired up in advance and is expected to present their scene at a performance-ready standard. This focused intensive is designed to challenge and inspire participants, offering a unique environment to grow as performers and take creative risks.
Course Outline
Over the 2 days, each participant will work on various scenes from Death of a Salesman and The Beauty Queen of Leenane, being directed by Paige, with a focus on the following areas:
- Deep Text Analysis: Analyzing the themes, character motivations, and subtext in both plays to uncover deeper meaning in the dialogue.
- Character Work & Analysis: Breaking down the psychological makeup, relationships, and arcs of the characters to create multidimensional portrayals.
- The Rehearsal Process: Experiencing the progression of a scene from read-through to rehearsal, experimenting with choices, blocking, and timing.
- Commitment to Authenticity and Truth: Ensuring each performance feels raw, authentic, and grounded in the emotional truth of the character’s journey.
Paige’s direction will guide participants to bring these iconic plays to life with sincerity and depth.

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. Please note full payment of the course is due by the time the course finishes. You can start payment instalments at anytime upon receipt of the invoice.
About Paige Rattray
Paige was the Director, New Work and Artistic Development for the Sydney Theatre Company from 2022 to 2024, an Associate Director from 2018 to 2022 and was chosen as the STC’s Richard Wherrett Fellow for a consecutive two years (2015, 2016). Paige was previously the Associate Artistic Director at Queensland Theatre. She is a co-founder of award-winning, independent theatre company ARTHUR, and a graduate of NIDA.
In 2024 Paige directed Into the Shimmering World by Angus Cerini for the STC, as well as the UK premiere of her hit musical Fangirls at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. 2023 saw Paige direct two major works for the STC, a revival of Do Not Go Gentle by Patricia Cornelius and Ella Hickson’s OIL. Previous to that, Paige directed The Lifespan of a Fact starring Sigrid Thornton for the STC and the premiere production of Glace Chase’s Triple X for STC and Queensland Theatre, Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit starring Courtney Act and Death of a Salesman. Paige also directed a remount of Fangirls at the Sydney Opera House.
Earlier in 2021 Paige directed the premiere production of James Elazzi’s Queen Fatima for Sydney Festival and the National Theatre of Parramatta. In 2020 she directed The Deep Blue Sea for STC and was the Production Dramaturg on their critically acclaimed production The Picture of Dorian Gray. In 2019 Paige directed The Beauty Queen of Leenane for STC and won the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Direction of a Mainstage Production. Earlier that year Paige directed the commercial and critical hit musical Fangirls for Queensland Theatre, Belvoir St Theatre and ATYP. The production has since toured nationally in 2021 and it won the 2019 Sydney Theatre Awards Best Mainstage Musical Award and the Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret, as well as Paige being nominated for Best Director.
Paige directed How To Rule The World, the premiere production of Black is the New White including the 2019 and 2018 Black is the New White Tours, Australian Graffiti and Power Plays for Sydney Theatre Company, Bright World for ARTHUR/Theatre Works and Hedda, Scenes from a Marriage and Switzerland for Queensland Theatre. Other credits include the premiere of Melissa Bubnic’s Boys Will Be Boys for Sydney Theatre Company, This House Is Mine with Milkcrate Theatre and her widely toured work Cut Snake.
Paige’s company ARTHUR is a known for creating contemporary Australian works, both text-based and devised. From 2011-2016 they have presented 15 seasons nationally, developed and presented 7 world premieres of new Australian work and toured and presented work in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland.
For screen, Paige most recently worked as the Dramaturg on Fremantle Media Australia/Netflix’s hit show Heartbreak High S2. She is also attached to co-direct a feature film for Fremantle Media, and is in active development to direct a tv series based on a hit play. Paige worked as a creator and Senior Producer on the 3 part current affairs program The Whole Table in collaboration with SBS and STC.
