The one year part-time 2021 Perth Actors Ensemble is 80 sessions or six hour a week (Monday’s & Wednesday 7pm – 10pm) comprehensive outcome oriented series that aims to integrate a sustainable work / life balance, by providing high level training and performance opportunities, with the ability to continue your working and professional lives.
This series is perfect for those emerging actors, looking to learn both the craft skills of repertoire training in Voice, Movement, Theatre, Improvisation & Film and also the business skills of Actor Entrepreneurialism, whilst also continuing their careers and lives outside the course.
As an actor, and the founder of The HubStudio, I have been through long term training courses, and truly – I believe the sands have shifted. I honestly don’t believe a two year or three year full time course is a.) sustainable, b.) affordable, and c.) integrated into the reality of what it’s actually like to be a working professional actor. As a working actor, the best thing you can do is to be involved in the industry, learning both in class and on the job, engaging in the studio as a resource but not an ‘all consuming environment’. At the end of the day casting agents and producers will judge you by your craft and your unique personality, so you need resources, ears on the ground, coaches who know what they are doing, and a studio that can connect the dots, giving you both structure and flexibility. The HubStudio is perfectly placed to offer you both degree quality training, and full industry integration. Our teachers are nearly all old guard NIDA, WAPPA, and ACA coaches, and if not they are working as actors and directors themselves, so from a training aspect you are covered. However where we differ is The Hub has it’s own producing company, runs multiple courses for professional working actors, runs events, rehearsal space and has one of the most active alumni networks in the industry, with over 1500 professional actors on it’s database.
In other words we’re an on the ground company of actors for actors, living lives in the industry and we’re by far an institution, were an incubator, a Hub, one that’s real – highly professional but actually reflective of what the industry is like, and you’ll be right their in the mix, where you should be, not holed up in a shiny institution with conflated structures, resources and histories. Instead The Sydney Ensemble will be your course, and your resource. Together we’ll get you what you need to survive and thrive in this fantastic industry.
Graduated Sydney Ensemble members Josh, Laneikka and Emily were recently interviewed about their time on the course and what they learned. Take a listen!
Working with our full range of industry leading coaches, the 2019 Ensemble will cover all basics starting with Movement and Improvisation, moving to Film & Voice, then Theatre theory & practical, finishing with our showcase ready Film & Theatre works in preparation for a final Industry Showcase.
Through each term there will be two Industry blocks where you will work with key industry professionals such as casting agents, mind training coaches and social media experts, and two Breakfast Briefing sessions, where we invite actors, writers, agents and producers, to come and chat with you about their experiences. Each term will work towards at least two event showcases / performance outcomes to make sure its as practical as possible. For full breakdown click below.
The first ten week term is an introduction to the beginning of great repertoire training. We kick of with our first Industry block, with an introduction to Actor Entrepreneurialism. From here we have several Movement and Improvisation blocks, looking at the fundamentals both of the body in space, and impulse work through character improvisational techniques. Mid-way through we have another Industry Block working on Mind Training, with a Personal Story Event in week five and long form Improvisation Event in week ten, as well as two industry Breakfast Briefings in week three & eight.
This term will give you all the fundamentals, before we start to layer film and theatre work in detail.

Mid Term is our second Industry Block on fundamental Business Skills. From here we run more Film in Casting Technique and further develop Voice, where by the end of term we’ll run a series of ‘as real-life’ Mock Film Castings.

TERM THREE Theatre Technique / Theatre Practical / Voice & Movement
The third term is when we start our theatre work! However before we do, we’ll spend four session re-capping both our Movement and Voice work. The remainder of the term will be broken down into two main parts; Theatre Technique & Theatre Practice where we look at the mechanics of crafting a character thought the study of The Creative Habit. In Theatre Practice will be the practical implementation of the craft through on the floor partnered scene work in a Masterclass format. Added to this we have our Industry block’s focusing on the core fundamentals of Producing your own work, and on Writing your own work. Through our two Breakfast Briefings we’ll be inviting in a key actor/producer and actor/writer to talk you through their experience.
By now the series has added the main core element of Theatre basics and Theatre practice whilst layering in how to create and write your own work, both fundamental skills. On top of this you’ll be revisiting voice work and movement work to integrate them back into your scene work.

The fourth term is when it all comes together, culminating in a professional Industry Showcase. The start of term will be our last Industry block on TVC Casting followed by another four session re-cap of both Voice and Movement. From here we will work in both Film & Theatre simultaneously; you’ll be creating more screen test’s whilst also rehearsing additional theatre scenes, adding to your reel and repertoire. This is a very practical term, which in essence will ready you for a final Industry Showcase where we invite agents, casting directors and other creatives to enjoy your work. Our two final Breakfast Briefing sessions for this term will be one with a Casting Director, and finally with Oliver Wenn The Director or The Hub – working on next steps strategies for each actor. By no means does it spell the end of your association with The Hub, and we want to make sure you’ll be well resourced and supported into your next journey outside the course.
By Term Four you would have grown hugely as an actor, now being equipped with the skills to continue your growth as a working professional actor.
